Sangiovese can be challenging to get right outside of Italy, but this is really impressive. Winemaker Jeff Hundertmark, who oversees Mt. Boucherie and their adventurous new Modest Wines label, understands what makes Sangiovese tick. He's not pushing the ripeness or extraction, and this wine's all the better for it. Even at 13.9%, this is light on its feet, with a seamless balance.
Maybe best of all: Jeff is also an Ottawa Senators fan.
Tasting Note
A five-percent dollop each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc are added to this Sangiovese, which is sourced from Quinta Ferreira Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. There’s true Sangiovese character, with juicy dark cherries, spice, and fresh florals, without sacrificing a sense of place, with desert shrubs that transport you to the South Okanagan. Even better with a light chill.
Food Pairing
Pizza from Tratto (if you live in Penticton), or else homemade pizza will do.
