Lambrusco, in part, is a victim of its own success. Popular throughout the '70s and '80s, Lambrusco became synonymous with sweet sparkling red wine. But the truth is much more nuanced.

Lambrusco is a family of grape varieties from Emilia-Romagna in Italy – this wine is made from Lambrusco Salomino, for example. It's also a style of wine that, yes, is both sparkling and red. But it is made in varying levels of sweetness, with many dry (secco) or off-dry (semisecco). The combination of acidity and bubbles means these wines often benefit from a pinch of residual sugar, just like any other sparkling wine.

The good news is that Lambrusco is back in a big way. They're hip and trendy, and, for the time being at least, the wines still offer incredible value. Medici Ermete winery, one of the region's leaders, is a great starting point if you're just getting (back) into Lambrusco. Not only are they certified sustainable, their Concerto Lambrusco Reggiano is the world’s first single vineyard vintage Lambrusco that is sourced entirely from the organic vineyard surrounding the family's estate.

Tasting Note

This is archetypal Lambrusco Salomino. Just barely off-dry, this brilliant sparkling red wine is pure and expressive, combining juicy, succulent wild berries with perfumed violets and layers of spice. The relatively low alcohol (11.5%) is part of what makes this wine so versatile, with a mouth-watering finish that is just calling for food.

Food Pairing

Easy to drink on its own, Lambrusco Salomino is best enjoyed chilled and served with antipasti. A perfect afternoon is as simple as Lambrusco and a charcuterie board, or take things to another level with a prosciutto and arugula pizza.
