Moric is arguably the world’s leading producer of Blaufränkisch, led by "Blaufränkisch whisperer" Roland Velich. It sounds like a niche title, but Blaufränkisch is the second most important red grape variety in Austria after Zweigelt, with over 6,000 planted acres. (For comparison, the most planted red grape in BC, Merlot, has just over 1600 acres.) For my money, Blaufränkisch is the most interesting, too. It's the parent of Gamay and Zweigelt, which gives you some indication of the style. It's commonly light and juicy, but there's also a nobility that takes you closer to Pinot Noir.
Indeed, Velich's guiding star is Burgundy, and there is something Burgundian about his wines. That's certainly the case with this wine. It's a pure expression of place, of Burgenland, yet with an overt Burgundy attitude. This bottling draws from vines up to 50 years in age, grown on limestone, which are then fermented with indigenous yeasts. Roland favours a Burgundian approach in the cellar, too, with long, extended macerations and aging in seasoned oak.
Tasting Note
Light-to-medium bodied, this is elegant and moreish with juicy raspberry, black plum, and brambles, joined by sweet spices, pepper, and earth. It's ageworthy and beautifully structured, but difficult to resist now. A classic expression of Blaufränkisch.
Food Pairing
Go for a classic regional pairing like goulash or Vienna sausage. You can also cheat with gourmet hot dogs.
