Voliero was born to pair with food. Andrea Cortonesi was already running a cult Montalcino label named Uccelliera, but he needed a house pour for his new restaurant, Il Casato. Today, Voliero wines are sourced from higher elevation vineyards to show a more elegant, refined side of Sangiovese, which makes them both incredible food wines as well as a wonderful contrast to the muscular wines of Uccelliera.
This 2019 Toscana Rosso spent far less time in barrel relative to its Brunello siblings, but it still shows fantastic depth and power. Antonio Galloni has said that Cortonesi's biggest competition is only himself - and with wines this good, it's hard to argue.
Tasting Note
Predominantly Sangiovese, this savoury, robust red is a compelling expression of Tuscany with sour cherries, herbs, and spice. The combination of juicy acidity with firm, dusty tannins makes for a well-structured wine that is perfectly balanced for the dinner table.
Food Pairing
Tomato-based pasta dishes like classic lasagna.
