Unsworth 2020 Chardonnay

2020 Chardonnay

Unsworth

Vancouver Island, British Columbia | $35.99

The Cowichan Valley, the first and only sub-GI on Vancouver Island, boasts a Mediterranean climate, with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. This unique climate is aptly reflected in the First Nations Salish translation of ‘Cowichan’: warm land.

Similar to the Okanagan and Similkameen, it experiences a dry growing season thanks to the rainshadow effect of the Insular Mountains. However, it also receives maritime influence that moderates seasonal temperature variations, distinguishing it from the more continental climate in the interior.

The 2020 vintage marks only the second release of Chardonnay at Unsworth, yet it shows the deft skill of winemaker Dan Wright, who lives and breathes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. And, of course, it benefits from the distinct terroir of Vancouver Island.

Tasting Note

Aged for eight months in neutral French oak, this cool climate Chardonnay intertwines lemon curd and yellow apple with a dash of Island salinity. It's such an elegant, pure expression of Chardonnay, showing why the best BC expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay aren't coming from the Okanagan or Similkameen, but the Island.
