Bodegas Albamar 2021 Fusco Mencia

2021 Fusco Mencia

Bodegas Albamar

Ribeira Sacra, Spain | $41.99

Founded 25 years ago by Xuxo Alba as part of a family project, Albamar is a coined acronym derived from the family name Alba and the fact that its vineyards are located by the sea. The winery produces wines with minimal intervention that evoke a strong Atlantic character.

Albamar Fusco, however, stands as a truly distinctive creation—an inland Galician red wine, originating far from the sea in the Ribeira Sacra sub-area of Chantada. It is cultivated from vines aged between 30 and 40 years, nestled in granite and clay soil, and shaped by a continental climate.

Maintaining a dedication to minimal interventionism, Alba approaches both the vineyard and the winery with a commitment to preserving the wine's natural character. Grapes are meticulously harvested at their optimal ripeness, and once harvested and destemmed, they undergo a 20-day fermentation. During the aging process, the wine rests on lees for 4 to 6 months in stainless steel. The result is an elegant, light-bodied, pure-fruited, spicy red wine with a modest 13% alcohol and delicate minerality.
