Peter Wetzer 2021 Kekfrankos

2021 Kekfrankos

Peter Wetzer

Sopron, Hungary | $38.99

Peter Wetzer, raised in a winemaking family, developed a passion for natural winemaking during his studies. In 2007, he acquired five vineyards near Sopron in northwest Hungary, formerly the capital of Burgenland.

Specializing in Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), he tends to 2.5 hectares across five vineyard sites. Additionally, Wetzer cultivates one hectare of Furmint and another hectare with a toybox of varieties, including Pinot Noir.

Emphasizing healthy soil with natural biodiversity, he minimizes vineyard inputs, and avoids tilling and leaf trimming. All grapes are hand-harvested, and each vineyard undergoes separate fermentation, reflecting Wetzer's commitment to terroir, site-specific winemaking.

Tasting Note

This is such an expressive Kékfrankos, offering a litany of spices that includes anise and licorice alongside crunchy dark berry fruit that shows a sappy edge. I love this style of red: medium-bodied with juicy acidity and fine tannins, making it perfect to serve with a light chill.
