Founded in 1074, Zwettl Monastery holds a rich viticultural history in Kamptal, Austria. In 1171, the Monks of Zwettl planted their first vineyards: Heiligenstein & Gaisberg, the oldest documented vineyards in the area. Passing through the hands of 19 families, the estate and Castle Gobelsburg which would become Schloss Gobelsburg endured through the centuries.
Now guided by Eva and Michael Moosbrugger, the winery has reclaimed its prestige, emerging as a leader in quality and innovation. Today, it continues to employ organic winegrowing practices initiated by the Zwettl monks as early as 1958.
Tasting Note
While Grüner Veltliner is typically quaffable and light, Kamptal, renowned for its loess soils, produces classic, medium-bodied Grüners with stone fruit, herbal nuances, and a touch of white pepper spiciness. The variety’s natural high acidity and stony minerality from loess soils create a synergistic balance, ensuring that even full-bodied Grüners maintain a zippy, refreshing character. This wine offers chestnut and toasted almonds, accompanied by white flowers and a touch of orange zest.
