2021 Bordeaux Supérieur

Château Recougne

Bordeaux, France | $27.99

Château Recougne’s reputation for trusted wines displaying exceptional terroir goes back over 400 years. The Milhade family has for four generations made wine here, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Xavier Milhade, overseeing his family's properties of Château Recougne and Château Boutisse, has passed his winemaking talent to his son, Marc, now one of the leaders of the younger generation in the Saint-Emilion area. Xavier's sister Elodie is taking on an increasingly important role running the non-winemaking side of the estate. As Bordeaux recalibrates towards producing wines of freshness and balance, Recougne stands as an example of a pure, fresh style that has remained steadfast for over half a century.

Marc’s winemaking philosophy and energy are guided towards putting in more work in the vineyard, so that less intervention is needed in the cellar. Since 2018, Château Recougne’s vineyards have been certified “High Environmental Value” Level III with Haute Valeur Environnementale, the highest level of certification. Planted around the château, the vineyards cover 246 acres. 222 of which produce red AOC Bordeaux Supérieur wines, the other 24 acres produce Bordeaux White.

Château Recougne’s 2021 Bordeaux Supérieur is a blend of 78% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The various blocks that go into this wine were vinified separately prior to blending. The wine is consistently bottled a minimum of 2 years after harvest.

Tasting Note

A bouquet of plum, chopped chili, licorice, and blackcurrant. This Bordeaux Supérieur’s medium-bodied palate is fresh and elegant, supported by fine, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity.

Food Pairing

Roast chicken with thyme, rosemary, and garlic will echo the Château Recougne 2021 Bordeaux Supérieur’s herbal notes while letting the red fruit shine. If you feel like mixing French regions, Beef Bourguignon will be another stellar match. Slow-cooked dishes with depth will seamlessly pair with the wine’s earthy nuance and soft tannins.
