V for Van Westen: Since Jake Van Westen moved to Naramata from Holland in 1954, the family has cultivated apples and cherries. Grape-growing began in 1999, inspiring his son Robert to establish a winery after realizing the quality of their grapes. In homage to their Dutch roots, the names of all Van Westen wines start with the letter 'V'.
Terroir and Winemaking in Tandem: This 2022 Viognier is a result of cooperation of the exceptional terroir of North Naramata and meticulous winemaking done for the variety. It presents a restrained expression of the grape showing a verve and liveliness reflecting the region. Depth and roundness are achieved through fermentation and maturation in neutral French oak, culminating in a wine that hits the mark with precision and finesse.
Tasting Note
This shows quite an attractive nose, combining fragrant honeysuckle and jasmine with expressive apricot and lemon that's balanced by a touch of cream and spice. There's a verve and liveliness to the palate, rare for viognier, which is reflective of North Naramata, with fruit sourced from Orlando and Granite Ridge vineyards. The result is a wine that is immensely moreish, but still with excellent varietal character and complexity. Add this to the long list of outstanding BC Viogniers.
