Since its founding in 1930, Basa Lore has been instrumental in preserving the unique identity of Getariako Txakolina, one of Europe’s most distinctive wine styles. For nearly a century, the estate has safeguarded this coastal tradition by cultivating only indigenous Hondarrabi Zuri vines on steep, ocean-facing slopes. Winemaking remains focused on clarity and freshness, with fermentation in stainless steel retaining the wine’s natural effervescence and crisp acidity. Through manual harvesting, minimal intervention, and a strong connection to local consumption, Basa Lore has ensured that Txakoli remains a true expression of Basque heritage while gaining recognition beyond its borders.
The vineyards are located on steep, south-facing slopes between 50 and 200 meters above sea level. Calcareous clay soils, rich in marine fossils, provide a distinct mineral character to the wine. These soils are the result of ancient seabeds once covered by the waters of the Bay of Biscay, leaving behind a mineral-rich foundation that imparts both freshness and complexity to the wine. The cooling Atlantic winds and morning mists from the bay moderate the local climate, ensuring that the grapes retain their natural acidity. The defining characteristics of Getariako Txakolina stem from its unique microclimate, which gives the wine its signature crispness, freshness, and complexity.
