Born into a winemaking family in 1965, Gérard Bertrand captained the French national team as a centre and earned thirteen caps between 1988 and 1992, before a family tragedy prompted his return to the family domaine in 1990. Under the wing of Robert Drouhin, the revered Burgundian winemaker from Maison Joseph Drouhin, the young Bertrand absorbed a Burgundian respect for low yields and site expression. That mentorship honed his palate for finely balanced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and instilled an early commitment to sustainable practices. Today he oversees nine certified organic and biodynamic estates across Languedoc-Roussillon, leads the Sud de France brand, and has helped elevate the region’s international reputation through both quality and environmental stewardship.
Perched at roughly 500 metres in the Haute Vallée de l’Aude, Domaine de l’Aigle embodies a true expression of terroir. Vines grow on steep slopes of limestone and marl formed during the Eocene epoch 30 to 40 million years ago. The Tramontane wind keeps mildew at bay and encourages thicker skins, while diurnal temperature swings of up to 15 °C preserve vibrant acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested in small crates, meticulously sorted and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel before spending 12 months in Burgundian oak barrels. The resulting Pinot Noir blends Burgundian clarity with the character of high-altitude Mediterranean terroir, offering bright cherry and wild strawberry aromas, a pronounced mineral backbone, and finely honed tannins.
Tasting Note

Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, earthy mushroom dishes, or creamy Brie.
