Overlooking the Danube River, the Wachau’s signature terraced vineyards cling to dramatic slopes, some exceeding a 50-degree incline. These ancient stone terraces create a sun-drenched, well-drained environment where vines dig deep into a patchwork of gneiss, granite, and loess soils. This unique geology imparts a mineral backbone that defines Wachau Grüner Veltliner’s identity. The steep slopes, coupled with the cooling winds from the Danube River, slow the ripening process and help preserve the grapes' natural acidity. This interplay of challenging terrain and climate conditions results in wines that are precise, fresh, and marked by a distinct minerality - hallmarks of the Wachau’s profile.
Domaine Wachau is part of Vinea Wachau, an elite alliance of growers committed to upholding one of Europe’s oldest and most rigorous wine quality systems. The region’s wines are classified into three categories, based on alcohol content: Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd. Steinfeder wines have an alcohol content of up to 11.5%, resulting in light, aromatic wines with refreshing acidity. Federspiel wines, with alcohol content ranging from 11.5% to 12.5%, offer a balance of freshness and complexity, displaying more body and structure. Smaragd wines, with an alcohol content of 12.5% and above, are fuller-bodied, more concentrated, and richer in texture, making them the most complex wines of the region.
