The Produttori del Barbaresco was founded in 1958, during a time when Barbaresco's growers were facing severe economic hardship and limited market access. A local parish priest organized 19 struggling families to pool their Nebbiolo fruit and share a single cellar in the village of Barbaresco. Over the following decades, membership grew to around 60 families who collectively farm 45 hectares across seven communes, including the prestigious crus of Asili, Montestefano, Rabajà, and Ovello. The cooperative's central cantina ensures consistency through uniform fermentation protocols, and aging all wines in large Slavonian oak casks. Even small growers are able to benefit from the cantina’s modern equipment and rigorous quality controls.
Since 1958, the Produttori del Barbaresco has showcased the full spectrum of this appellation, producing a village-level Barbaresco, a reserve cuvée from top parcels, and seven single-vineyard crus. Each cru spends a minimum of 24 months on its lees in large oak vessels, followed by at least 12 months in bottle prior to release. The cooperative releases roughly 400,000 bottles annually, which are exported to more than 50 countries. The Produttori del Barbaresco’s steadfast focus on site expression, low yields, and long macerations has positioned it alongside historic names like Gaja and Giacosa, even though the cooperative typically offers a more accessible price point.
