Hidden Treasures is an initiative aimed at rediscovering Hungary's viticultural treasures. It is a natural extension of Roland Velich's philosophy, which strives for a pure and direct representation of the region's essence through traditional methods and unwavering faith in its inherent quality.
Project number 1, crafted in collaboration with Gergö Fliep in Tokaj, features a single-varietal Furmint, grown on volcanic soils and aged in large wood. Roland’s goal is to champion the indigenous grapes of this ancient winemaking region and ensure that more people experience the dry iterations of Furmint, a grape traditionally used in the production of sweet Aszu wines.
Tasting Note
This shows a combination of lemon, Anjou pear, and tangerine, with a distinctive herbal quality that is inherent to Furmint. Part of Furmint's appeal is its marked minerality, and this shows its volcanic origins with a salty character that carries the palate, leading to an electric, lip-smacking finish. It's a serious expression of Furmint, to be sure, and one that shows its true potential.
