2022 En Famille Pinot Meunier

Joie Farm

Okanagan Valley, Canada | $38.99

Pinot Meunier is one of the three key varieties used in the production of Champagne, valued for contributing vibrant fruit flavours and aromatic complexity to non-vintage blends. As its name suggests, it belongs to the Pinot family and originates as a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir. Pinot Meunier vines are distinguished by their unique, hairy leaves, which reflect the variety’s adaptability to cooler climates. However, some growers note that it exhibits a greater expression of varietal characteristics in warmer climates than Pinot Noir, and its adaptability allows for cultivation in a range of terroirs, balancing acidity and richness in the resulting wines.

The Okanagan Valley has experienced a significant increase in Growing Degree Days (GDD) in recent decades. From 1970 to 2014, GDD increased by nearly 50% at some locations around Okanagan Lake. This rise in temperatures has resulted in particularly concentrated fruit, as seen with the En Famille Pinot Meunier, which comes from a vineyard planted in the late 1980s on the Naramata Bench. JoieFarm originally used these grapes in blends for their still and sparkling rosé wines. However, the consistently ripe and flavourful fruit in recent years has inspired the creation of a standalone wine.
