Maison Smith Montpetit

Similkameen Valley, Canada | $35.99

Maison Smith Monpetit, based in Canada’s organic growing capital, the lower Similkameen Valley, is all about letting the fruit do the talking. But as an organic winery, that’s not so easy to do. First off, without synthetic chemicals, the vineyards require more frequent spraying than conventionally cultivated parcels. Additionally, work in the cellar requires extra precision to avoid oxidation, as the wines, in many cases, don’t receive as much sulphur. But winemaker Erich Smith-Peter is on point, and his first Merlot is a standout: full-bodied, juicy, mineral-driven, and lifted by just the right touch of acidity.

The Lower Similkameen earns its reputation as Canada’s organic growing capital for good reason. The valley benefits from a unique wind, similar to the Mistral in southern France and the Tramontana in Italy, which helps keep pests and diseases in check. This natural airflow also prevents mildew, reducing the need for frequent spraying and supporting more environmentally friendly farming practices. As a result, over 40% of the crops grown in the Similkameen Valley are cultivated organically.

Tasting Note

This Merlot was aged in 20% neutral Hungarian oak, 30% new French oak, and 50% neutral French oak. The result is a wine that’s both rich and balanced, with vibrant notes of stony minerality, raspberry, and black cherry, complemented by hints of Similkameen desert scrub and tobacco.

Food Pairing

Pair this Merlot with herb-crusted lamb & black cherry reduction for a perfect match.
