The premier site of Coyote Canyon Vineyard in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills AVA, owned and farmed by the Andrews family, is known for its exceptional Rhône varieties. The Grenache vines grow in sun-soaked silt, clay, and limestone soils shaped by the ancient Missoula Floods. Ben and Katie chose to work with Grenache from Coyote Canyon for its ability to thrive in persistent winds and over 300 days of sunshine. Plus, this decision allowed Ben to work with a grape from his Australian roots after the deep freeze hit 1 Mill Road in 2024. Ben Bryant knows a thing or two about Grenache and this wine clearly proves it.
This is a youthful Grenache, to be sure, that will benefit from time to unwind. However, it's immensely satisfying now, especially with just the lightest chill. When we talked about being excited about what our favourite winemakers would do with Washington and Oregon fruit for their replacement wines, this is exactly what we had in mind.
Tasting Note
Bright and expressive, 1 Mill Road’s 2024 Grenache opens with aromas of sweet cherry, strawberry and rose petal, layered with white pepper and wild herbs. Silky and medium-bodied, the wine lingers with fine tannins and a long, graceful finish. A pitch perfect balance of freshness and fruit ripeness.
Food Pairing
For 1 Mill Road’s 2024 Grenache, we’re reaching for a dish that has poise without getting finicky. For us that’s flatbread with prosciutto, arugula, and goat cheese. The salt from the meat and cheese, in combination with the greens’ bitterness will complement the wine’s sophisticated fruit-forwardness.
