H. Cuvelier & Fils is a long-established Bordeaux négociant family with deep roots on the Left Bank. In 1804, Henri Cuvelier founded the négociant firm H. Cuvelier et Fils in Lille. The firm prospered throughout the 19th century, distributing French and foreign wines to enthusiasts in Northern France, Flanders and England. Throughout the years, each generation has contributed to the family’s tradition of making great, yet accessible wines.
Closely tied to Médoc tradition, and with a passion for precision winemaking, the family’s philosophy is rooted in showcasing the character of each vintage through thoughtful sourcing and blending. The Cuvelier family focuses on wines that reflect place, and age-worthiness rather than heavy extraction or obvious oak. Vinified with the same care as their classified growths, the wine is aged in stainless steel and a portion in French oak to preserve freshness while adding subtle complexity.
Tasting Note
Notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle dried herbs give way to a medium-bodied palate with firm but polished tannins. Framed by a restrained use of oak, this wine’s core is dark fruit along with an expected dusting of classic Médoc savouriness.
Food Pairing
The 2018 H. Cuvelier & Fils Haut-Médoc is a wine that pairs excellently with a charcuterie board favouring salt, fat, and umami rather than something spicy or sweet. This wine’s dark fruit and structure would clash with chili crisp. Instead, reach for Bresaola, Prosciutto, or a dry French salami, along with an aged cheddar. Add some roasted almonds, some briny olives and you’ll have the perfect nibbles to match this wine.
