You can’t write the story of the Okanagan without Osoyoos Larose. The winery began as a joint partnership between Vincor (now known as Arterra) and Groupe Taillan from Bordeaux, whose portfolio includes iconic brands like second-growth Château Gruaud Larose. Bordelais winemaker Pascal Madevon oversaw the first vintage in 2001, and since then the winery has been one of the most consistent producers in the Valley.
Today, winemaker Michael Kullmann is ensuring that the winery will continue to play a pivotal role for years to come. He has an articulate, thoughtful vision for the winery's next 20+ years. And, in talking with him, it's clear that he's the perfect person for the job. He's leading the winery's transition to organic certification, overseeing reinvestment in the vineyard and cellar, and even launching their first wine club. You'd think it'd be too much for one person. But then you haven't met Michael.
Tasting Note
From Osoyoos Larose’s own library, and generously made available to our club members, the 2016 Pétales d’Osoyoos highlights one of our favourite Okanagan vintages of the last ten years. Drinking beautifully at 7 years of age, this still shows a core of ripe black fruits, with blackberry and plum, alongside tertiary, savoury notes of cedar, tobacco, and dried sage. Medium-bodied and showing the freshness of the 2016 vintage, the tannins are nicely resolved at this stage, though it will continue to hold for the next 3-4 years. A Merlot-dominant blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Food Pairing
Lamb Navarin (French lamb stew) or braised beef cheeks.
