Esporao

Alentejo, Portugal | $27.40

Alentejo stretches across Portugal from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border. For good reason, it's split into eight sub-regions. Esporao is just 30 minutes from the Spanish border in the sub-region of Reguengos, marked predominantly by granite and schist soils. Here, between the abundant cork trees, you’ll find some of the best value reds in the world of wine.

This organic red blend combines 11 different grape varieties, with a focus on traditional Portuguese varieties like Aragonês, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Trincadeira. Even if you've never heard of Aragonês before, you've likely tasted it under a different name: Tempranillo. The result is a juicy red that makes a perfect midweek pour.

Tasting Note

This has an attractive balance of juicy fruit and savoury complexity, showing sappy wild red berries along with peppery herbs, tobacco, cedar, and spice. Soft and silky, there's a freshness here that belies the warmth of Reguengos, with well-balanced acidity. Best enjoyed with a light chill.

Food Pairing

Penne all'Arrabbiata, a spicy tomato-based pasta, or Panzanella salad
