Moric 2020 Hausmarke Supernatural

2020 Hausmarke Supernatural

Moric

Burgenland, Austria | $50.50

Highly allocated and sought after, Moric’s wines are only available in limited quantities in BC. Blink and they’re gone. So, we only wish this could be our go-to hausmarke, or house wine.

It’s an unexpected blend of Grüner Veltliner and Chardonnay, which makes complete sense in the hands of legendary winemaker Roland Velich. Last shipment, we talked about how Velich's guiding star is Burgundy. Well, there's certainly something Burgundian about this wine, even if the blend heavily skews towards Grüner. Tasted blind, you'd almost be tempted to call this Chablis, if it weren't for Grüner's hallmark notes of white pepper and celery salt.

Tasting Note

This is precise and vervy, with a generous amount of fruit: restrained, zesty lemon and white grapefruit alongside Anjou pear and Honeycrisp apple. I love the savoury accents of fennel, celery salt, and a hint of spice, with a salinity that really forms the backbone of the wine. Aged in used barrels, there's a richness to the palate, with exceptional dry extract, suggesting this is the rare hausmarke that is truly ageworthy. A serious wine, and such a fun discovery.
