Abbazia Di Novacella was founded in 1142 by the Augustinian Order of Canons Regular. The Augustians aren’t monks in the familiar sense. Sure, they have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to their superiors – but they also grow grapes for winemaking.
The abbey has long been known for producing world-class organic wines that offer tremendous value. Though it is one of the oldest wineries in the world, with over 850 years of winemaking experience, the cellar is entirely modern.
Tasting Note
This falls somewhere between a light-bodied Pinot Noir and Gamay – at least to my palate. It's juicy and red-fruited, with red cherry and wild strawberry alongside fresh mint and a violet floral lift. It's incredibly food-friendly – light-bodied with soft tannins and bright acidity – and is best enjoyed with a light chill. Perfect for the last warm days as we head into fall.
