2021 Fiano di Avellino ‘Pietracalda’

Feudi di San Gregorio

Campania, Italy | $46.99

Fiano di Avellino is one of Italy’s most ancient white varieties, first noted by Pliny the Elder who wrote extensively about the sub-regions of Campania. Ironically, the same volcanic ash that now forms the soil for Fiano di Avellino is from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which tragically claimed Pliny’s life.

Fiano, historically known as Vitis Apiana or the "Bees' Vine" in the Roman Empire, boasts a rich history. The name reflects how the sweet grapes, ripening by late October, attract local bees. With their thick skins, these grapes produce wines that capture the complexity and smokiness of their terroir. Today, Fiano di Avellino, with its limited cultivation area of under 600 hectares, is one of Italy's most prized DOCGs.

Tasting Note

This shows a lovely balance of fruit and mineral tension, with a distinctive volcanic smokiness. Golden apple and candied lemon are accented by spicy undertones and heightened by fresh chamomile and honeysuckle. The acidity is crisp, balancing the rich, creamy texture and mineral backbone.

Food Pairing

Grilled prawns or classic Naples dishes like Polpo alla Luciana (octopus slow-cooked with tomatoes, olives, garlic, and capers)
