Even though winemaker Roland Velich once made a living as a croupier, this sequence of numbers—20, 19, 17, and 16—has nothing to do with his past in a Viennese casino. These numbers represent the vintages combined in the Solera for the current version of his red housemarke, or house wine.
The Hausemarke is Velich's only red wine that is not solely made from Blaufränkisch. Zweigelt and Pinot Noir add fruitiness and elegance to the savouriness of Austria’s flagship red grape.
Tasting Note
This really shows why Moric is one of the leading producers in Austria. It offers stacks of red beet and licorice aromas, as well as black cherry and wild blackberry. There's so much juicy fruit, but also ripe, structured tannins that lift and elevate this medium-bodied red into something well beyond your average house wine.
Food Pairing
Goulash or beef stew with spaetzle.
