Pinot Noir’s thin skins can make this variety prone to disease, and on the other end of the spectrum can also make it prone to over-ripeness. There’s a small window of climate and place that Pinot Noir grows well in. The Dijon clone 115 is classically one of the most prized Pinot clones by winemakers for the earthiness that 115 contributes to a finished wine. But it's a very finicky clone - which is saying something for an already fussy grape. There must be particular care given in the vineyard to control yields of 115, otherwise it can be hard to ripen if it's overcropped. Whereas clone 667 is known for its low-yielding ripeness and intense ripe aromatics.
Vigneron Sébastien Hotte leads the winery's focus on low-intervention winemaking. This Pinot Noir, a combination of 115 and 667 clones, was native fermented in tank over 18 days (40% whole cluster) before heading to neutral oak barriques for 10 months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. At the 2025 WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada, Lightning Rock’s 2022 Canyonview Pinot Noir received a Platinum medal.
Tasting Note
Bright red fruit flavours of strawberries, raspberries, and sour cherries are complimented by earthy notes of fresh sage, black tea and cocoa powder.
Food Pairing
Mushroom-anything would pair well with this wine. If you can get your hands on morels then you’re in for a real treat. Roasted beet salad with goat cheese would be another stunning match for this wine’s balance of savouriness and red fruit notes.
