Celler Masroig is located in the Priorat region in the town of El Masroig in Spain. Just over 500 people live here. For more than 100 years, Celler Masroig has been working to be the economic driving force of this community. Within the Montsant DO (Designation of Origin), a Spanish wine appellation in Catalonia, Celler Masroig is widely considered to be one of the benchmarks.
On steep slopes, Celler Masroig’s native Carignan vines face south. The clay soils, rich in iron oxides play a key role in the Solà Fred wine. During the typical hot days of the growing season, the red clay soils retain moisture while during the cool nights, the soils hold onto warmth. The resulting grapes are balanced between a rich concentration and natural acidity. After the Carignan grapes are picked, they’re fermented in stainless steel. Without any oak used, the Celler Masroig winemaking team prioritizes freshness in this savoury red wine.
Tasting Note
Lashings of ripe red berries, and blueberries intertwined with liquorice and sweet nutmeg spice. Alert and vibrant with juicy tannins and a lively finish.
Food Pairing
Solà Fred’s natural acidity and savoury edge make it a perfect accompaniment to the hearty dishes you’ll crave once there’s a chill in the air. Turn to shepherd’s pie, chicken thighs with paprika and harissa, or roasted vegetables with thyme and oregano. If you’re looking to open this bottle right away, pizza with a tomato sauce base will be the natural complement.
